Reading is an attitude that is built with time. There is a lot to benefit from reading if we hope to succeed in life, to catch up with the trend of transformation and development; if we want to be actively involved in the making of today’s world. The evidence that one is willing to play a part in this big drama titled ‘The World’ is how well such person concerns himself with events that happen, and the best way to fallow, is reading. To become a good reader, you need to know the following.
1. Know why you want to become an avid reader.
Whatever you do in life will always have a driving force. To become an avid reader too, you must tell yourself convincingly what becoming an avid reader will benefit you. You don’t just wake up and say you want to become an avid reader without a spelt out reason. Others have their reasons built in them as a result of where they were brought up and the training they had. But for you, you require more than just wanting to be an avid reader. Perhaps you should know that reading will help to develop my IQ. It will help me to fit very well in a prestigious class. I will have better insight on how to handle troubling issues in my life. Any other reason could be chosen and be made the driving force. And then the endeavour becomes less stressful.
2. Set a goal to read a number of pages within a particular time (maybe 50 pages a day).
It depends on your reading speed at the moment you decide to become an avid reader. How many pages already can you read in a day? From here, you will know the level of improvement you need. Consistency, however, is key here. You should ensure that you consistently read a particular number of pages in a day, so you can tell how many days it will take you to finish reading a 200 pages book. As you continue, it may feel really difficult to be committed but ignore the pains and just continue. In a short while it begins to transform into a habit; and what was your fear becomes your habit.
3. Pick interest in learning new things.
You need to increase your span of interest. Maybe you are the type that hardly get interested in things outside your immediate concern, for instance you may say “How does the crisis in Africa affect my life?” Fiction stories may not interest you, especially because they are usually not true. But you should make effort to develop interest in other things. With that, you will have more questions to ask, thereby more reasons to go reading.
4. Share with others what you learn through reading.
If what you read doesn’t seem to add value to your relationship with others, you may not be encouraged to continue. You should try to help someone with the knowledge you are getting from your reading; and before you know it, you will have a lot of people running to you for advice and encouragement. The response you get will make you want to do more. You may not be able to link you newly found self with what is happening around you, but you will find yourself ready and willing to learn new things all the time.
5. Don’t bother about how confortable you have to be before you can read.
If you are looking for the best time or best place before you start reading, you may never get to start reading. Other activities of life will never give you that chance. Therefore, in between and within any engagement you have, use particles of time to read something. You may be in car going to work; you may be cooking in the kitchen. The little time you are not doing any specific thing, pick your book and read a line. If you are able to do this, you will be able to do better when you set a time for reading. Other routines will always conflict with your reading especially when you are trying to build the habit. At all cost, make sure you give some attention to reading.
