How to Develop your Writing Ability
Writing is something that the world cannot survive without. Even in the supernatural, writing exists. It is the safest means to preserve or transfer information from one person to another through times and generations. We get access to great ideas of great men through the things they write; or they die with their ideas which become something that never existed. Today, the advent of the internet has done much of creating a world of writing. You want to be a part of this world of writing but you are restrained by some factors you may not be able to blame on anyone exactly.
there are people with great ideas
However, there are people with great ideas; great stories to tell or information to disperse, but they often feel like something is restraining them from writing. The interest is there, the idea is there and maybe the skill is equally there but the practice somehow is absent; sounds weird maybe. But there are times you eagerly sit to start writing, knowing very well what you want to write about, but you find yourself siting for twenty minutes without writing a word. And sometimes you only keep postponing until the interest in the said subject eventually disappears.
To be candid, the act of writing is not always such an interesting thing to do, not like a little boy smilingly drawing some incoherent lines and circles on any carelessly kept book or piece of paper; but the art …, I say the art of writing could really be interesting. The act could be terribly boring, but what keeps the writing going is the art, the beauty in the expected end, whatever it is that would make you want anyone to read what you have written. Sometimes when you write a piece, you tend to read it again and again because you enjoy the art captured in maybe the grammatical construction, the sequence of ideas, the creative choice of words, the beauty in the message you have given or the story you have told etc.
At other times your main focus may be simply or largely on the good news you want to share. You have something in mind, maybe a solution to a general problem, and you want to share it with others. The best available means may just be through writing and publication. In such case, you may be restless for as long as you are yet to get your write-up ready for public consumption. But even with all the burning desire to write, you just find yourself not writing.
What then could be the cause? Why is it difficult for you to write?
- Sometimes you find difficulty starting to write because you have too many approaches and you are confused which one to adopt.
- Sometimes, it is because you are confused which idea should come first; that is arrangement of ideas.
- At other times, the problem is that you are not sure if your writing will interest your readers.
- One rear problem is that your mind is full with a lot of things you want to do. Any time you sit to write, that is when you feel that you should do something else: wash your cloth, eat your food, watch a movie lie down a bit etc. but you usually don’t know about what is happening to you until probable after months or even years.
The problems may be many, but the solution is just one if you want to develop your ability or skill. It is summarized in this simple sentence; don’t procrastinate.
Don’t procrastinate for any reason. Whenever you sit to write, make sure you write something, no matter how short, how senseless. Just start writing. Write what comes up first in your mind. Keep writing them as they come. When you get to some point, especially when you have exhausted your idea at the moment. You may stop and read through what you have written and start making adjustment.
